GENERAL DESCRIPTION

As an AI Engineer, you will drive the evaluation and adoption of new technologies and engineering approaches at Crane. You'll work directly with technology leadership to prototype new approaches, advise technical and business teams adopting new tools, and work with tech leads to evolve our stack to enable smooth AI integration.

You'll take a pragmatic approach, prioritizing valuable use cases with measurable outcomes, and pushing for simple approaches where extra complexity isn't needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Take point on technical development & exploration for a small number of high-value, clearly scoped AI use cases (POC mode)
  • Partner with other engineering teams to turn successful POCs into enterprise-scale, production-ready solutions (builder mode)
  • Work with technical leadership to shape our data & software architecture to work well with both developers and agents/models
  • Drive converging key standards with technical strategy to develop an AI platform approach to manage observability, testing/evaluations, authn/authz for model plugins & tools, cost management, and flexible model adoption
  • Work with business teams on vendor evaluations and new project rollouts
    • Advising on necessary technical guardrails
    • Opening the black box of vendor implementations
    • Identifying where commoditized tools can replace higher-cost, custom offerings from vendors to reduce lock-in or cost
  • Work with technical teams on structured adoption of AI workflow enhancements, e.g. working with platform teams on adding standardized development copilots that speed up development & review cycles while minimizing slop
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Talking, hearing and using hands to operate computer equipment
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • Job will require regular and punctual attendance as well as presence on-site at the assigned work location

OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Strong understanding of data/backend fundamentals around compute, storage, and streaming
  • Comfort with front-end development
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools in your developer workflow
  • Hands-on experience with managing & deploying cloud resources
  • Comfortable presenting to other developers & engineers in a group context

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  • 3+ years programming in a team context
  • Ideal:
    • Strong experience with repeatable deployment & development patterns using IAC, Docker, etc
    • Experience implementing ML or optimization projects
    • Hands-on experience implementing LLM-based tools in a business context

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Professional certification may be required in some areas
